VC support letter: Wellcome Trust University Awards in Humanities and Social Science

Closing date:
Tuesday, 18 May 2021

The Wellcome Trust invites applications for the University Awards in Humanities and Social Science. Please note that funding offered by the Wellcome Trust is changing to support their new strategy – the University Awards scheme will be closing after this iteration of the call.

The Wellcome Trust offers these University Awards to enable humanities and social science researchers at an early or mid-stage in their career to acquire permanent positions in academic institutions. Up to five years’ support is available, providing full salary for three years, 50% in the fourth year, and 25% in the fifth year. After this, it is expected for the researcher to take up a permanent position at the academic organisation. Awards also support research expenses, materials and consumables, animals, equipment, and travel and subsistence costs. During its first three years, the award will allow the awardee to focus on research rather than teaching and administration.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants can apply for this award only if they have been nominated by their prospective Head of Department (HoD).
  • All applications require a guarantee that the applicant will gain a permanent academic position at the end of the University Award.
  • The applicant should hold a PhD or the equivalent experience and have developed a competitive track record in a related area of research.
  • Applicants who hold a permanent academic post are ineligible to apply for this award.
