Bridging the Skills Gap: Computer Vision Training for Marine Ecologists
University of Cambridge
Workshop

Tue, 10 Mar 2026 10:00 AM - Wed, 11 Mar 2026 4:00 PM

Organiser
Emily Mitchell, Department of Zoology
Location
British Antarctic Survey (Cambridge, UK)

Computer vision tools are transforming marine ecology, enabling researchers to work faster, more consistently, and at greater scales. However, many ecologists do not understand the underlying technologies, lowering their trust and confidence in deploying these tools for their own work.

Our 2-day in-person training workshop will bridge this skills gap, introducing the fundamental concepts, methods, and workflows required to apply computer vision to marine imagery. Participants will learn how to process raw data, build reproducible analyses, and interpret outputs with confidence, equipping them to integrate these approaches into their own research.

The workshop is free to attend (with limited travel/accommodation support) and open to UK-based researchers, with priority for PhD students and ECRs in benthic ecology. Minimal programming and no machine learning experience required.

Application deadline: 5pm (UK time), 30th January 2026.
