Environment & Sustainability Grand Challenge - Sustainability Mission
There is an increasing immediacy in our discussion around climate change, with many experts expecting keeping global temperatures below +1.5°C pre-industrial levels to be impossible. This indicates an urgency in how we decarbonise, we can’t wait for net-zero solutions, we must act now. AI provides methods to immediately reduce emissions and fight climate change.
Our mission is to support transport and infrastructure to reduce emissions. Working with Lloyd’s Register Foundation (a global charity supporting research, innovation, and education in engineering) we have developed Data-Centric Engineering approaches to assist and drive the implementation of Data Science, Machine Learning and AI into transport and infrastructure. We are currently focused on the implementation of these methodologies within key themes based on the UK’s emission profile: Marine and Maritime, Manufacturing, Critical Infrastructure and Interpretative Technologies.

ROLE PURPOSE
As part of the Science and Innovation, you will provide the push mechanism for innovation, spotting gaps in the current industry practices where technology is required to boost impact. This has been initiated with the view that providing models at scale are necessary for true impact and we are developing an AI Data Engineer to automate the generation of data pipelines in companies. We will focus on 4 main areas of research:

Pulling data from a range of sources and generating well-structured databases.
Training Machine Learning tools, determining when retraining will be necessary and assuring the quality of the trained models.
Designing and deploying the pipeline automatically from raw data to trained models
Interpreting the results and communicating them to an expert without AI knowledge.
