Open Source AI Fellowship Call 2025
Closing date

The Alan Turing Institute

We are seeking exceptional researchers and technologists with an interest and expertise in Specialised AI Model Development and Secure Systems Engineering to spend 12 months as a Fellow with The Alan Turing Institute and be embedded within a team at the UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) to develop high profile open-source use cases for the UK Government.

Fellows will work on high-impact problems, which could include:

  • Secure AI assistants for processing sensitive documents entirely on government systems – crucial for work like national security translation, where data must never leave secure environments.
  • Planning and regulatory tools trained on UK law and policy to support faster, fairer decision-making for citizens.
  • AI systems that can support emergency responders or NHS staff during power outages or network failures, by working fully offline when it matters most.

This pilot programme is delivered in partnership between Meta, DSIT and the Turing, and aims to:

  • Grow the AI ecosystem in the UK by supporting, retaining and accelerating the careers of top research talent and technologists.
  • Enhance the UK government’s capability in open-source technologies and solutions.
  • Develop high-profile and impact public open-source use cases for the UK Government.
  • Facilitate greater talent mobility between the civil service and external sources of expertise.

Who can apply?
We are looking for individuals who combine technical excellence and entrepreneurial thinking with leadership skills.

Suitable candidates will have a builder's mindset with experience shipping technical products, thrive in ambiguous, fast-moving environments, and demonstrate the ability to architect and deliver complex AI systems independently while creating meaningful real-world impact.

Fellows must:

  • Be employed by a UK organisation to enable a secondment into DSIT
  • Have a contract of employment that goes beyond the end date of the Fellowship; and
  • Meet our full eligibility criteria as outlined in the call document.

Secondments will reimburse actual salary costs up to £85,000 per annum.

The Institute is committed to building a diverse network of fellows; we encourage applicants from a range of backgrounds to apply.
