Department of Zoology
A Research Group Manager and Bioinformatician post is available in the Centre for Pathogen Evolution, directed by the Principal Investigator, Derek Smith, in the Zoology Department at the University of Cambridge.
The group operates at the forefront of global public health research, holding a portfolio of approximately £12M in active grants and contracts from major US and UK funding bodies, including NIH and MRC. The group's work contributes directly to the World Health Organisation's influenza strain selection process, through the operation of a bioinformatics pipeline that processes global data on influenza virus evolution, curates WHO datasets, and generates reports for the WHO's bi-annual Vaccine Composition Meetings.
This is a senior, dual-focus role combining research group management with hands-on bioinformatics responsibility. As the PI's primary delegate, the postholder will hold delegated authority for financial, HR, and administrative decision-making across the group's grant portfolio, managing a multidisciplinary team of postdoctoral research associates, research assistants, and PhD students. In parallel, the postholder will take direct ownership of the group's bioinformatics pipeline and server infrastructure, including the curation of large-scale datasets and the maintenance of the systems underpinning the WHO strain selection reports.
A strong track record in research group and grant management - including experience navigating US and UK funding frameworks - is essential, alongside advanced proficiency with Unix-based systems and remote Linux server administration, experience with HPC environments (e.g. SLURM), and proficiency in Git/GitHub. Experience in Python and/or R for data processing is desirable....
